The new Chair in Family Medicine is the first of its kind in French in Ontario. The goal is both simple and ambitious: to improve primary health care for all Canadians, with a particular focus on French-speaking minority communities.
“The research activities of the Chair in Family Medicine will aim to produce rigorous knowledge aimed at improving the health and quality of life of our patients, their families and our communities,” explains Dr. Bjerre, who holds the Chair. “My research program on access to healthcare and the appropriate use of medication at the population level, which I will continue to actively pursue, is also in line with this goal.”
Dr. Lise M. Bjerre is the first holder of the Chair in Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa and the Montfort Knowledge Institute, effective January 1, 2021. She is an epidemiologist and family physician practicing with the Family Health Team at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. She holds a B.Sc. in Biology (BSc Hons.) from Concordia University, an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from McGill University, an M.D. (Diplôme d'études médicales; MDCM) from McGill University, and an M.D. (Dr. med.) from the University of Göttingen, Germany. She is also certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP). In addition to her clinical career in family medicine on two continents, she has considerable research experience as a clinician-scientist in the Department of Family Medicine since 2010, and is also affiliated with the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa. The accomplished researcher is also an Associate Scientist at ICES - the organization responsible for Ontario's population health databases, which she uses for many of her studies.
Her main research interests focus on access to primary healthcare (particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations, including minority francophones and rural populations) and the appropriate use of medications at the population level. It also focuses on evidence-based knowledge synthesis to improve clinical practices and support patient involvement in the management of their own health. In addition, she makes use of artificial intelligence (AI) in combination with population databases as a research tool, enabling better use of existing data.
