Biography

Dr. Le Gal is a professor in the hematology division at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, an affiliated physician in the thrombosis program of the hematology division at The Ottawa Hospital, and a seasoned scientist associated with the clinical epidemiology program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Grégoire Le Gal was born in France and studied there. After obtaining his medical doctorate from the University of Brest in 1997, he completed his residency in internal medicine in 2004 and received a PhD in clinical epidemiology from the University of Brest in 2007. He completed a postdoctoral training in internal medicine at the University Hospital Center of Brest (France) and in angiology at the University Hospitals of Geneva (Switzerland), and then became a clinical and research fellow as part of the thrombosis program at the University of Ottawa in 2008. Doctor Le Gal returned to France to serve as a professor of internal medicine at the University of Brest before his appointment to the Research Institute of Ottawa Hospital in 2012. Dr. Le Gal's research primarily focuses on the diagnosis and management of venous thromboembolism. (TEV). He studied the diagnostic value of the signs and symptoms of DVT. Regarding this application, he developed a clinical decision rule for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in the emergency room and deep vein thrombosis in primary care settings. He also participated in the development of a clinical decision rule regarding recurrent VTE. Furthermore, he contributed to several studies that ensured the external validation of previously established clinical decision rules. Finally, he designed and validated management strategies for VTE based on adherence to these clinical decision rules. Doctor Le Gal has published 216 peer-reviewed articles in general internal medicine journals and specialized journals. A member of the international advisory board of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, he is also among the reviewers for major journals on thrombosis and general internal medicine. Finally, he took on the role of principal investigator in several multicenter research projects on the diagnosis and management of VTE.
