Dr. Isabelle Burnier holds a doctorate in medicine from the University of Grenoble in France, as well as a master's degree in education with a specialization in teaching healthcare professionals from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Burnier is Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, Director of Clinical Skills and Director of the Pre-Externship Program for the French-speaking component. She is responsible for simulated clinics and for the PIEPS program (Programme de formation des patients impliqués en éducation des professionnels de la santé) within the Faculty of Medicine's Francophone Affairs.
Her commitment to teaching students is particularly evident in the pre-externship program (case-based learning, clinical skills training, simulation).
Her research frameworks in medical education are patient involvement in the teaching of healthcare professionals and simulation-based learning with simulated patients. She has conducted several research projects on the training needs of simulated and real patients. She is interested in writing and cloning simulation scenarios.
