Thomas Foth is an assistant professor at the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa. He has worked on various research projects in the areas of interdisciplinary collaboration between nursing staff and physicians, the professionalization processes of nursing sciences in Germany, as well as psychiatry in that country. As a nurse, he has worked in various sectors of the profession. He taught at a nursing school in Germany before coming to Canada. His doctoral research project examines the involvement of nursing staff in the massacre of over 200,000 sick individuals during the Nazi regime. He received financial support from the German foundation Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Research Unit on the History of Nursing Sciences of the Associated Medical Services (AMS) at the University of Ottawa.
Her areas of interest include the history of nursing science, critical theory of nursing interventions, nursing theories, philosophy of science, ethics, care for marginalized populations, technology and nursing, power relations between healthcare professionals and patients, as well as social relations of gender. Overall, his works are based on the analytical approach to discourse and focus on the works of Michel Foucault, allosexual theorists, and postcolonial studies. It is also based on approaches drawn from actor-network theories and the "new" critical theory in Germany.
