Biography
Stéphanie Bélanger is a full professor and chair of the Department of French Language, Literature, and Culture at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). She is also a founding member and associate scientific director of the Canadian Institute for Military and Veterans Health Research (ICRSMV/CIMVHR), a pan-Canadian network dedicated to improving the health and well-being of service members, veterans, and their families.
Her research, leadership, and knowledge translation activities align directly with the priorities of the Institut du Savoir Montfort, which aims to advance research, education, and innovation for the benefit of Francophone communities and the Canadian healthcare system.
Known for her interdisciplinary approach, her research program lies at the intersection of the humanities, health, ethics, and military studies. Her work focuses in particular on psychological trauma, mental health, resilience, psychological well-being, healthcare experiences, and the human impact of crises and conflicts. She is particularly interested in how narratives, lived experiences, and social determinants influence the health, recovery, and quality of life of individuals and communities.
As editor-in-chief of the indexed Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health, she contributes to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and the promotion of evidence-based practices in the fields of mental health, rehabilitation, family support, and health services.
Her research has led to numerous collaborations with researchers, clinicians, community organizations, and government partners in Canada and internationally. Her work aims to better understand the needs of vulnerable populations and to develop approaches that promote more humane, inclusive, and effective policies and care models.
She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Royal Military College (RMC), and a certificate in addiction from the Faculty of Medicine at Laval University. She is currently pursuing a Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy at Hearst University. She also served as a reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces for twenty years, from 2004 to 2024.
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Institut du Savoir Montfort, Stéphanie Bélanger brings recognized expertise in applied research, mental health, knowledge translation, and partnership development. Her commitment to improving public health, training the next generation of researchers, and promoting knowledge in French helps support the Institute’s mission: to improve the world of health and the health of the world.
